This is Samantha. Virginia just emailed me this map of Virunga National Park, Africa’s oldest national park founded in 1925, and the 2nd oldest national park in the world. Some of our bloggers work in this part of the world, so I thought it would help you all to see this.

Atamato blogs from Ishango, the dot right on the northern shores of Lake Edward.

Elie and the Advance Force are often at Mutsora in the northern sector. Follow the border north from Ishango and you will see it, due east. The park station is Mutsora and the village is Mutwanga. Virginia and I refer to this in our posts on this blog.

2/3 of the Advance Force, Diddy and Innocent are down south at the moment at the park headquarters in Rumangabo. That is half way between Goma and Rutshuru.

And then the Mikeno Sector - the area we are all watching and waiting for - is the section in the south east that borders Uganda and Rwanda. That is where the Mountain Gorillas live. You can see Bukima on the map and Djomba (also spelled Jomba).

Atamato has referred in recent posts to the hippo massacre last year in Lake Edward. That happened on the southern shores of the lake, near Vitshumbi. Moving east from there you can see Lulimbi - the rangers there are always being attacked by one armed group or another and are forced to flee.

Somba is north-west of this area in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, and the Lomami River (Ash Vosper’s blog) is due west of the park.

Hey Samantha! I’m getting 404′d when I click the map to blow it up. I’d like to print it in color to keep as a reference. Thanks,
s.

Yes, thank you so much for the map. I also tryed to blow it up and got 404′d? I’ve been on google earth looking around at all the areas. Even though it’s not a “live” shot, it’s amazing to see some what a live map on google earth. If that makes sense? Have you guys checked google earth out? Lisa, California

The file ‘http://manioc.wildlifedirect.org/virunga_map_virginia.JPG’ is missing? I tried to guess other permutations of the filename with no luck. Can you please post a link to the correct filename?
I too was thinking of asking for a map, but didn’t want to make more work. A big map would help a lot!

Gosh. What is 404′d?? i am afraid that is a little beyond me. I do however have a solution! Please email info at wildlifedirect dot org and I will ensure that you get the original sized map.
Does that sound like good idea? I await your emails. Thanks.

And that comment above was from me, Samantha. Innocent was with me yesterday using my computer because his is a bit kaputt! He was leaving answers to some comments.

Error 404 is ‘file not found’! The file http://manioc.wildlifedirect.org/virunga_map_virginia.JPG is MISSING. The link probably has the wrong file name? If someone knows the correct filename, just post the correct link?

If you ever redo the map, can you please put the ’sector names’ on it? Thanks! It is a great map and even I can read the names of the places!

Sam, we should develop a map with a waypoint for each blog’s latest post.

It would map out WildlifeDirect article in the same manner that Google Earth maps Wikipedia’s articles.

No WP plugin available unfortunately, so it would require some skill and time.

Are the Italians capable of playing with the Google Maps API?
