In 1960 there was an estimated 1 million chimpanzees in Africa. Today, 172,000 to 300,000 individuals are said to be left. About 40% of these live in DR Congo. This is according to J.A.C.K. Jeunes Animaux Confisques au Katanga (Young Animals Confiscated in Katanga). Rob Muir blogged about this organization in May. Chimpanzees are still being poached, eaten and sold. JACK, an NGO based in Lubumbashi and set up in April 2006, runs a refuge center for chimpanzee orphans in southeastern DR Congo. For each orphan at least 10 chimpanzees are said to have died in the wild. Recently a young chimpanzee was confiscated by the Provincial Minister of Environment, Mrs Thérèse Lukenge, in the Lubumbashi area and handed over to JACK. Franck at JACK sent me these photos: The rescued chimp - the poacher had called him Jack Mrs Lukenge hands the confiscated orphaned chimp to Franck Weak after the ordeal And lost And missing home Gradually recovering with Franck’s help I am encouraging Franck to blog on WildlifeDirect. If you think he should blog please leave a comment here and I will tell him I am not the only one who would like regular updates on his valuable work. Samantha

All of the blogs on the Wildlife direct site are important to those of us not “in the trenches”. It gives people across the world the opportunity to see what is happening and feel like they are involved. I am sure that this not only spreads the conservation message, but also helps raise funds for these worthwhile programs. So…blog when you can!

Franck, I would love to read about and support your organization. I think the work that you are doing is very crucial and blogging with WildlifeDirect would be a fantastic way for you to help raise awareness and funds for the chimps. Poor little Jack, I hope he has a quick recovery from his ordeal. ~ Robin

Thanks Sam for bringing this organisation to our attention. Many of us would appreciate hearing about Francks work on WildlifeDirect. Please keep trying to persuade him to eb a blogger here, it would raise awareness and certainly support for his efforts. With such dramatic increases in human populations around the world the great apes surely have a bleak future.

Franck, I couldn’t agree more with the comments already posted. I would love to support J.A.C.K. as well as the poor baby orphan you are rehabilitating. Please let us know how Jack is doing and what we can do to help.

good morning. yep, keep up the good work. there are many who would like the info to be a regular feature. you may want to take a look at another project in gambia, in which i take an interest, http://www.chimprehab.com . this shows that with time and effort, this project could become self funding. hope it at least provides some inspiration. good luck, and please continue to update…

Yes, Franck should absolutely blog here. As for the poachers, I think there’s a hell waiting for them to burn in. s.

I too would like to see Franck blog with WildlifeDirect. How else would we hear about their work?

Blog, Franck, blog! You have no idea how many times I’ve heard someone say, “I had no idea!” after I’ve sent them to the WildlifeDirect site. The blogs here make such a difference in getting people involved and in getting their support.

Can we get an update on the baby orphan? Has there been any signs of improvement? Can’t stop thinking about him. Thanks.

Yes, Franck should definitely blog! It would be very interesting to learn about what it’s like caring for a baby chimp day-to-day. What’s the routine like? What foods are being eaten? What toys are enjoyed? What are the personality traits?

Please keep on blogging! I have so much respect for your work! I really need to know how the baby chimp is doing!

Great work Franck! Will look in regularly to find out how little Jack & the others are doing. Without a blog from time to time, no-one will know about your tremendous work or how to support you.
Samantha (WildlifeDirect) on October 26th, 2007 at 2:49 am
Well i would say that that response is a RESOUNDING YES!
